SEATTLE (AP) — The Coast Guard says a container ship has reached a disabled 32-foot sailboat drifting nearly 800 miles west of the California-Oregon border.
Petty Officer 1st Class George Degener in Seattle says the three people on board the Hale’s Revenge are uninjured. It was on its way from Honolulu to Everett, Washington, when it activated a locator beacon Sunday evening calling for help.
The Coast Guard says the 965-foot Hyundai Grace arrived on scene about 6:30 a.m. Monday and was establishing communication. Degener says the weather has deteriorated with 20-foot seas.
He says a Hercules HC-130 from Air Station Sacramento is scheduled to fly over the scene to monitor, communicate and drop any needed supplies.
The cargo ship is part of the Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue system, or Amver.
